The Amazing Power of Chia Seeds!

Remember the “Chia Pet”?  It turns out that Chia not only makes an amazing plant sculpture, but is one of the most powerful health foods on the planet. Chia is part of the mint family, originally from Mexico and Guatemala.  Chia seeds can be brown, grey, mottled, white or black, with a mild flavor.  They are very high in Omega-3 oils.  The Aztecs, Mayas, Tehuantapecs and other Indigenous people consumed chia seeds for hundreds of years as a staple that gave them incredible energy and endurance.

The word Chia means ‘oily’ (from the word chian).  Chia have more Omega-3’s than both flax and kiwi seeds.  It is also high in protein, containing all of the amino acids except for taurine.  You can grind them and add them to anything, mix in with juice or milk for a fresh chia drink or sprout them and eat them fresh.  You will also find Chia in many new products from bars to drinks.  From benefits to your brain and digestive system to increased energy and endurance, you can’t lose with Chia!

Turn-Key is now partnered with “Two Degrees Bars” (www.twodegreesfood.com) which incorporates chia into its delicious gluten-free food bars.  They also have a mission to feed 200 million hungry children through nutrition packs!

We are also proud to also work with “Mamma Chia” (www.mammachia.com), which makes a delicious chia drink with 2,000 mg of Omega 3’s!

The Turn-Key Lunchbox

Fall is in the air which means Back to School time for many of our families! We already know you are health-conscious – so packing up great lunches for the kids is a priority. But how do we get away from peanut butter and jelly every day? Here are some great ideas from the the Turn-Key team:

  • Humus (chickpea spread) and lettuce or green or red pepper slices
  • Peanut butter & sliced banana or apple
  • Bagel with smoked salmon & cream cheese
  • Veggie sandwiches: sliced cucumber, tomato, and alfalfa sprouts with mayonnaise and mustard, with or without cheese
  • Chicken salad: Chicken with mayonnaise or plain yogurt, chopped celery, salt, and pepper
  • Pita pocket: shredded carrots, sliced red peppers, cucumber, tomato, and chickpeas in a pita half; drizzle with a little plain yogurt or salad dressing
  • Hearty soups in a thermos, with breadsticks and carrot sticks
And a little square of dark chocolate is a wonderful treat to add! You can also adapt these to your own lunch box, they are just as good for adults. To save time, pack all the lunches for your family the night before work/school to make more time in the morning. That way you can enjoy a healthy breakfast without feeling stressed! You might even have time for tea.
